Greyfriars Vineyard is located on the sunny south facing chalk slopes of the Hog’s Back at Puttenham, just to the west of Guildford. Originally planted in 1989, the current owners, Mike and Hilary Wagstaff, took over in 2010, since when they have increased the total vine area to over 50 acres on three sites. Having also built a state of the art winery, bottling line and a natural chalk underground cellar, they have become significant quality wine makers, mainly focused on sparkling wines. In addition to making a range of wines from the three classic varieties, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, they also have several small plots of fruit used for their innovative range of still wines.
Guildown 1035 was named by the winner in a naming competition. The name is the medieval name for the Hog’s Back and was first recorded in 1035.
